Lesson 7
Finishing the Zip & Hemming the Skirt
In Lesson 7 - we are almost done. Just 2 more steps and you are ready to wear your gorgeous Miss Fox Dress.
Here's What You'll Achieve Today
- Finishing off the Zip
- Finishing off the Bodice
- Hemming the Skirt
Finishing off the Zip
Step 1 - You'll need to trim the CB of the lining by 1 cm. This way the lining will sit snugly to the zip.
Step 2 - Pin the lining to the zip with right sides together, making sure you turn up the hem of the lining bodice 1cm.
Step 3 - Attach your zipper foot and sew close to the zip underneath. Then turn to the right side.
Step 4 - Finishing the Zip:
- Turn the zip seam back onto itself with lining together and pin in place.
- Sew the neck seam 6mm/1/4" from the edge.
- Then trim the zip.

Step 5 - Turn to the right side and you've completed the zip.
Sewing the Bodice Lining
Step 6 - Now pin the bodice lining to the waist seam and either hand sew or machine from the outside.
Sewing the Hem
Step 7 - Now it's time to finish the hem.
It's important to note that if your dress is made in a lightweight polyester fabric eg. chiffon, georgette, some rayons, then you'll need to hang your dress for a few days so the skirt can drop and find it's level. If the hem is uneven after hanging for a few days then you'll need to level the skirt before hemming.
If you've made your dress from a more stable fabric eg. cotton voile, quilting cotton, some heavier rayons, then you won't need to hang your dress for a few days. You can just go straight to sewing the hem.
- Overlock the hem - if it hasn't already been done.
- Turn the hem up 2cm/3/4" and either hand sew or machine stitch the hem.
And that's it!!
