Finding Your Size

  • Refer to the Measurement Chart that you've downloaded.
  • Start with your Low Hip Measurement.  Work out what size your Low Hip will be.
eg.  my Low Hip Measurement is 107cm/42" so I'll use a size 12 for the hip.
  • If your measurements are in between sizes then use the next size up.
  • Now work out what your High Hip and Waist sizes will be.
1.  Rule in your CF line in a different colour and also draw a line (parallel to the CF) 25.5cm/10" down from the waist to the Low Hip.

2.  Draw a line down on the back skirt pattern 25.5cm/10" down from the waist to the Low Hip.

LOW HIP LINE

3.  Now square a line out from the CF to your size.

My hip is 107cm/42" so I've drawn out to the size 12 line.

4.  Repeat this process with the back skirt pattern.
WAIST LINE

5.  Square a line out from the CF to the size of your waist.  Check the Measurement Chart to get your waist size.

My Waist is 76cm/30" so I've drawn out to the size 10 line.

6.  Repeat this process for the back skirt pattern.

HIGH HIP LINE

7.  Measure down 10cm/4" down from the waist for the High Hip line.  Square out a line from the CF to your size.

My High Hip is 84cm/33" so I've drawn out to the size 10 line.

8.  Repeat this process for the back skirt pattern.
9.  Now re-draw your side seams.

As my High Hip size is a lot smaller than the Low Hip size I've made a slight curved line from the Waist line to the High Hip line.  If I made the line straight I would end up with a point at the Low High line.

10.  Repeat this process for the back skirt pattern.

Examples of Different Measurement Combinations

Example 1:
  • Waist size 14
  • Low Hip size 12

Because the Waist is bigger than the Low Hip the side seam is a lot straighter.

Example 2:
  • Waist Size 14
  • High Hip Size 16
  • Low Hip Size 12

This body shape has got a thick waist with a large tummy (high hip) and smaller hips (low hip).  And because of that there is a more of a curve at the High Hip rather than the Low Hip for my skirt.

Also, notice that I didn't connect the side seam to the Low Hip Line.  If I had done so it would have made the side seam a very odd shape.  It's quite OK to allow the skirt to drop from the High Hip to the hem.

Cutting Your Skirt Toile

Now that you've got your skirt pattern sorted it's time to cut your skirt Toile.

  • Make sure you cut the front skirt on the fold
  • And cut the back skirt with a back opening
  • Now mark your notches for the front and back darts, the side seam notches, CB notches top and bottom and the zip opening notch.

Sewing Your Skirt Toile Ready For Fitting

Sewing the Skirt Toile is a simple process but do follow these steps:

  • Sew your front and back darts
  • With right sides together sew your side seams using a 1cm | 3/8" seam allowance
  • Now WITH THE WRONG SIDES TOGETHER, sew up the CB seam to the zip opening notch

That's it!  Module 3:2 will show you how to fit your Skirt Toile to your shape.
