I have never really embraced this part of my profession......that's probably why I became a designer so I could make clothes that would fit or hide my flaws! As the saying goes - "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer". My enemy are my hips. My body shape is a Pear! But lucky for me I have wider shoulders than a normal Pear shape which makes for a better balance of my shape. So I can either choose clothes either for a Pear or an Hourglass Shape.
So, enough about me, what shape are you? Want to find out so you can make better decisions when choosing the best styles for you to sew for your body type?
Ok, here we go! Click the image below and it will take you to a fantastic site where you can calculate your body shape - that's if you don't already know. Then come on back and we'll discuss the styles best suited to your shape. I know most of us don't like our shapes and want to change them so my advice to you is to look at your shape from the third person. Pretend you are making an outfit for another person and you are calculating their shape. That way no emotion will come into the process - it does help!
A lot of different companies have lots of different body shape names but for this process and to make it easier, we'll just focus on 5 simple shapes:
Now the whole process behind finding the best styles for your shape is to play up the good parts and play down or hide the parts you don't like.
EG. For a Pear shape the problem part are the hips so you play up, emphasise or show off the waist and the shoulders with dresses that are waisted, draped wide necklines eg, boat, square round, collars and sleeves. And play down or hiding the hips by having darker colours on the bottom that the top. Having a-line skirts and no pockets that draw attention to that area.
Now for an Inverted Triangle shape you would do the opposite to a Pear shape. Play up the hips and the legs by having bright coloured gathered skirts with big patch pockets and baggy pants with patch pockets. But also you can have slim jeans as well. Keep the top area simple with not too much bagginess around the shoulders and neck and no high necklines.
Ok, so lets started.
